What Causes Thermal Runaway?

Thermal runaway is a chain reaction typically caused by:

  • Mechanical and electrical triggers such as crushing, piercing, or impact to the battery;

  • Electrochemical triggers including overcharging, over-discharging, rapid charging, low-temperature charging, and spontaneous internal short circuits due to aging or defects.

Once a single cell enters thermal runaway, it can quickly affect adjacent cells, resulting in thermal propagation and, ultimately, serious safety incidents. Therefore, effectively preventing or interrupting this chain reaction is critical in battery safety design.
